Instagram image sizes
Instagram works off one number: 1080 pixels wide. That is the maximum width it displays, and every supported shape is built from it.

If you want your posts to take up the most room in someone's feed, use portrait 4:5. It is 25 percent taller than a square on the same width, and feed space is attention.

Why 1080 and not larger
Uploading a 4000 pixel wide photo does not give you a sharper post. Instagram scales everything down to 1080 wide and re-compresses it, and its compression is harsher on a big file than on one already at the target size.
Resizing to 1080 yourself before uploading gives Instagram less work to do and generally comes out cleaner. Anything under 1080 wide gets scaled up instead, which is where soft, mushy posts come from.
Story and Reel safe zones
A story is 1080 by 1920, but you do not get to use all of it. Instagram puts your profile bubble and name across the top and the reply bar across the bottom, and Reels add captions, buttons, and the audio strip down the right side.
The practical rule: keep anything important inside the middle, roughly 250 pixels down from the top and 250 pixels up from the bottom. For Reels, stay clear of the right edge too, since the like, comment, and share buttons sit there.
File size and format
Instagram does not publish a hard limit for feed photos the way YouTube does, and in practice you will not hit one at these dimensions. Save as JPG for photos and PNG for flat graphics or screenshots with text.
If you are uploading over a slow connection and want smaller files, compress to 200 KB first. At 1080 pixels wide that is still comfortably sharp.
